Lockport Township has approximately 52 miles of roads. The Lockport Township Highway Commissioner oversees the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads and rights-of-way within the township’s unincorporated areas. The Commissioner also gets contracts, employs labor, and purchases necessary materials and machinery.

  • Brush and Branch Pick-Up Schedule
The second and fourth Thursday of every month, all areas east of Route 53 will be serviced. The second and fourth Friday of every month, all areas west of Route 53 will be serviced. The Township Highway Department picks up brush and branches (maximum 4 inches in diameter) from April through October. Branches must be stacked neatly with cut end placed at roads edge.
  • Free Wood Chips
Free wood chips are usually available. You may pick up a supply at the Township garage on South Avenue, one half block east of State Street.
  • Culvert Replacement
If your culvert needs replacing, the Township Highway Department will replace your existing culvert for the cost of the culvert pipe.
  • To Prevent Flooding
Please make sure the ditch in front of your property is clear of leaves, grass clippings, brush, and branches which can impede water flow. When culverts become blocked by collected debris, water backs up and flooding can occur. There are many ways to dispose of yard waste, but none of them include dumping it in the roadside ditch.
  • If Snow Falls
On your refuse pick-up day, before the waste hauler and snowplow have come and gone, please be sure your garbage containers are placed well back from the roadway. If you put them too close to the pavement, and the snowplow comes through first, your container may be damaged.
  • Snow Day Parking Restrictions
Street parking anywhere in unincorporated Lockport Township is prohibited at all times during and following a minimum 2 inch snow fall - until the snow has been cleared and subsequent visits by snow plows are unnecessary. It is each homeowners responsibility to make sure his or her vehicle(s) is removed in a timely manner when a snowfall is expected or underway. Vehicles not removed and hindering snowplowing operations will be towed at the owners expense and inconvenienced.
  • Which Streets are Plowed First
Because all streets cannot be cleared at the same time, there is a priority schedule which generally applies regardless of the jurisdiction in which a road is located.
    1. Major intersections are cleared first
    2. Primary collector streets to allow 2 way traffic to pass safely are cleared next
    3. Feeder streets, cul-de-sacs and dead ends are then cleared last
  • Mailbox Damage
If the Township Highway Department’s snowplow accidentally damages or knocks down your mailbox, call (815)726-6056 to report it. If any Township snowplow driver notices that he has inadvertently damaged a mail box, he will report it, an you will be notified. The box will be repaired or replaced at no cost to you.

NOTE: It should be understood that mailbox posts do not last forever. The Lockport Township Highway Department will not replace rotted or rusted posts or boxes that were placed too close to the roadway (the post office has information available regarding proper mailbox locations). In most instances, however, the department will help set up a temporary support so you can continue to receive your mail. Because the ground is frozen during the winter months all repairs made at that time will be temporary.
  • You Can Help
Please call the Highway Department to report the following:
    1. Burned out street lights
